El escritor británico incluyó en su obra Alicia a través del espejo (1872) un poema sin sentido, titulado Jabberwocky. No es sólo que el poema careciera de significado, sino que muchas palabras eran inventadas. Algunas, como por ejemplo chortled, galumphing y frabjous se incorporaron después a la lengua inglesa. Chortled, por ejemplo, significa «rió». Se han realizado numerosas versiones y traducciones del poema, que al igual que el original contienen palabras inventadas y carecen de sentido. El poema es el siguiente:
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
‘Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!’
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought–
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
‘And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’
He chortled in his joy.

Y para el que no sepa inglés que no se preocupe, viene a ser lo mismo leer el texto original sin conocer el idioma que leer una traducción al castellano. Sólo decir que la primera estrofa se traduce como:
«asuraba. los viscovivos toves tadralando en las vaparas ruetaban, misebiles estaban los borgoves, mientras los verdos momios bratchilbaban.»
Recuerda, en cierto modo, la forma de hablar del propio sombrerero loco que aparece en la novela.
